How to get a Canadian Study Permit
A study permit, enables foreign nationals to pursue studies at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada.
This country is one of the world’s top destinations for international education, offering high-quality academic programs, multicultural campuses, and a clear path to permanent residency for eligible students.

Apply for a study permit as a graduate student
If you are planning to enroll in a master’s or doctoral degree program, you and your family may be able to get faster processing on your applications..
To apply for a study permit, you must first apply to and get accepted by a Designated Learning Institution. If the school accepts you as a student, it will send you a letter of acceptance (LOA).
You need this letter to apply for a study permit.
Your family might apply for visitor visas, work permits or study permits. Submit their applications with yours, and IRCC will process them all together.
Eligible family members include your
- Spouse or common-law partner. Dependant children ( your, your spouse's or common-law partner's or
- dependent child of a dependent child.
Follow These 5 Steps to Study in Canada:
1.- Select the Ideal Program: Choose a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD program that reflects your academic interests and long-term career aspirations. Ensure the program is offered by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), as only DLIs are authorized to accept international students for study permit purposes.
2.- Create a Realistic Budget: While Canada offers cost-effective education compared to destinations like the U.S., U.K., or Australia, it’s essential to recognize that studying abroad involves various expenses. Factor in tuition fees, housing, food, transportation, health insurance, books, and other personal costs to ensure you’re financially prepared for your time in Canada.
3.- Collect All Required Documents: Before applying for a study permit, it’s essential to gather a complete and well-organized set of documents that prove your eligibility. Most applicants will need the following:
- A valid passport
- An official Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada
- Proof of financial support to demonstrate you can pay for tuition, living expenses, and return transportation
- A Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL) — now a requirement for most applicants under new 2024 regulations.
Tip: Be sure to include certified translations if your documents are not in English or French.
4.- Submit Your Study Permit Application: With your documents ready, it’s time to submit your study permit application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Most applicants apply online through the IRCC portal.

- Processing times vary depending on your country of residence, so it’s best to apply early
5.- Prepare for Departure: Once your application is approved, you’ll receive a Letter of Introduction from IRCC. This document is not your study permit, but it allows you to travel to Canada and present it at the border upon arrival.
At the port of entry, a border officer will issue your official study permit, allowing you to begin your studies in Canada!
