What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is an online system that Canadian authorities use to manage immigration applications from skilled workers. There are 3 immigration programs managed through Express Entry: Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
To improve your score you should:
- Get a valid job offer
- Contact provinces and territories and apply for a Provincial Nominee Program
- Upgrade your education and language skills
- Gain more skilled work experience.
Federal Skilled Worker Program
This program was launched back in in 1967
- Have at least 12 months of continuous work experience
- In a skilled occupation TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3, within the past 10 years
- Minimum CLB 7 in English or French (on all four abilities: reading, writing, listening, speaking)
- Proof of language proficiency from an approved test (e.g., IELTS, CELPIP, TEF)
Education
If you went to school in Canada, you must have a certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian:
- secondary institution (high school) or
- post-secondary institution
If you have a foreign education, you must have:
- An Educational Credential Assessment for immigration purposes
Proof of Funds
- You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and your family, unless you are already working in Canada or have a valid job offer.
Admissibility
- You must not be inadmissible to Canada for criminal, medical, or other reasons
Selection Factors
You are assessed on a 100-point grid and must score at least 67 points based on:
- Education (up to 25 pts)
- Language ability (up to 28 pts)
- Work experience (up to 15 pts)
- Age (up to 12 pts)
- Job offer in Canada (up to 10 pts) subject to certain requirements
- Adaptability (up to 10 pts)
- If you score 67 points or higher, you may qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker Program. You can then submit a profile to the Express Entry pool.
How Does the Federal Skilled Worker work?
- Create an Online Profile: Eligible candidates submit an online Express Entry profile and receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score
- Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA): IRCC conducts regular draws, inviting top-ranking candidates to apply for permanent residence
- Submit Application: Applicants have 60 days to submit all documents after receiving an ITA.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC) – A Fast Track to Permanent Residence
This program was launched in 2008. It is designed for temporary foreign workers with professional, skilled or managerial Canadian skilled work experience to apply for permanent residence in Canada. CEC recognizes the value of your Canadian work experience, integration into Canadian society, and your proven ability to contribute to the Canadian economy.

- There is no education requirement
- Direct pathway to Canadian permanent residency and future citizenship.
Federal Skilled Trades Program
The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents based on being qualified in a skilled trade.
Skilled trades need specialized knowledge and hand-on work
Skilled tradespeople may work in sectors such as:
