Family Sponsorship – Reunite with Your Loved Ones in Canada
Canada’s Family Sponsorship Program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor close family members to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents. This program reflects Canada’s commitment to keeping families together and offers one of the most generous family reunification systems in the world.
Who Can Be Sponsored?
You may be eligible to sponsor the following relatives:
- Spouse, Common-law Partner or Conjugal Partner.
- Dependent Children (biological or adopted, under age 22 and unmarried).
- Parents and Grandparents (through the Parents and Grandparents Program – PGP).
- Other Relatives (in minimal cases – e.g., orphaned siblings, nieces/nephews, or one relative if you have no other family in Canada).
Super visa for parents and grandparents
Parents and grandparents can visit their children or grandchildren for 5 years at a time with a Super Visa. It provides multiple entries for a period of up to 10 years.
There are specific requirements for a super visa, including the need for health insurance.
To be eligible for a super visa, you must:
- Be the parents or grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents and
- meet other eligibility requirements.
Your dependants are not eligible for a super visa. They can still apply to visit Canada for up to 6 months with a visitor visa or eTA.
Sponsor Requirements
- Be 18 years or older.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered under the Indian Act.
- Live in Canada (or plan to return before your sponsored relative arrives).
- Meet financial requirements (especially for parents/grandparents).
- Sign a sponsorship agreement committing to support the person for a set period.
- Not be in default of any previous sponsorship, immigration loan, or legal obligation.
